bio.fsm.undip.ac.id –  A community service team from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), conducted an educational activity titled “Introducing Medicinal Plants (TOGA) to Students of SMP 1 Undaan Kudus to Support the Greenhouse Program for Adiwiyata School.” The event aimed to introduce the concept and benefits of TOGA (Tanaman Obat Keluarga – Family Medicinal Plants) while supporting the school’s initiative to achieve Adiwiyata status, a national recognition for environmentally friendly schools.

Held at the multimedia room and greenhouse area of SMP 1 Undaan, the program was attended by 32 student members of the school’s Adiwiyata team, accompanied by teachers, especially those teaching natural sciences. The session covered various topics, including the identification and health benefits of TOGA plants, as well as simple cultivation and care techniques applicable at home or school. Students also had hands-on experience planting TOGA species in the school’s greenhouse.

SMP 1 Undaan Kudus Students Practiced Planting Medinical Plants

The UNDIP team was led by Dr. Susiana Purwantisari, M.Si., along with fellow lecturers Dr. Drs. Wijanarka, M.Si., Drs. Budi Raharjo, M.Si., and Dwi Retno Fatmawati, M.Si., and supported by Biology students. The team brought TOGA seedlings such as ginger, turmeric, temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), and butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) to be planted together with the students.

The principal of SMP 1 Undaan, Mr. Rodhi, S.Pd., M.Pd., expressed his gratitude for the collaboration. “We sincerely appreciate UNDIP’s support through this community engagement activity. As we prepare to apply for the Adiwiyata program this year, this initiative is highly relevant to our greenhouse theme,” he said.

The event was met with great enthusiasm. Students were actively engaged, asking questions, and participating in each session. Some even expressed intentions to grow TOGA plants at home as part of applying what they had learned.

Signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between the Faculty of Science and Mathematics UNDIP and SMP 1 Undaan Kudus

To formalize the partnership, the activity concluded with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between the Faculty of Science and Mathematics UNDIP and SMP 1 Undaan Kudus. This agreement will serve as the foundation for ongoing collaboration in education, training, and mentoring, particularly in biology and applied environmental sciences.

This program demonstrates a concrete contribution from academia in strengthening environmental education rooted in local wisdom, and fostering collaboration between universities and schools to build environmentally conscious character from an early age
