Marsya Abbel Irianti, a student of the Bachelor’s Program in Biology at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University, successfully defended her thesis during the thesis examination session held on July 30, 2024. The title of her thesis is *”Diversity of Protist Communities Using Environmental DNA (eDNA) Method with 18S rRNA Gene in the Sediments of Balekambang Lake, Dieng, Central Java.”*
Balekambang Lake, formed by volcanic activity in the Dieng Plateau, Central Java, is facing threats from sedimentation that can disrupt the ecological balance. This research aims to identify protist organisms that play a crucial role in sediment control and to understand the structure of the ecosystem in this aquatic environment. Marsya employed the Environmental DNA (eDNA) method, known for its efficiency and high sensitivity in detecting microscopic organisms, such as protists, through 18S rRNA gene analysis.
This research was supervised by two faculty members: Prof. Dr. Tri Retnaningsih Soeprobowati, M.AppSc, as the primary supervisor, and Ni Kadek Dita Cahyani, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D., as the secondary supervisor. The thesis examination was chaired by Rully Rahadian, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D.
Congratulations and best wishes to Marsya Abbel Irianti on this achievement. May her research contribute to the wider community, particularly in water ecosystem management and environmental conservation.
