bio.undip.ac.id. The Head of the Biology Department of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) at Diponegoro University (Undip), Prof. Drs. Sapto P. Putro, M.Si., Ph.D., who is also the head of the Center of Marine Ecology and Biomonitoring for Sustainable Aquaculture (Ce-MEBSA), participated in the International Academic Networking (IAN) 2024: International Conference on Aquaculture and Fisheries held in Barcelona, Spain, from September 8-10, 2024.

Prof. Sapto explained that the conference focused on discussions related to aquaculture and fisheries in various countries worldwide.

“Undip’s participation aims to strengthen academic networking, enhance reputation, and promote the university. Academic reputation and international research networks are two critical factors in global university rankings, in line with Undip’s vision to become a world-class university. This is expected to open opportunities for research collaborations, joint international conferences, and co-publications that will further boost Undip’s global reputation,” he stated.

On this occasion, Prof. Sapto served as a keynote speaker and presented his research findings. His presentation was titled “Development of IMTA Design Integrated with IoT Smart Biomonitoring for Productive Sustainable Aquaculture.”

In his presentation, Prof. Sapto explained that Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) allows for the simultaneous cultivation of various marine species in a connected food chain through the transfer of nutrients and energy within the aquatic ecosystem.

This initiative emphasizes the implementation of smart aquaculture systems integrated with a Geoportal Web Application Dashboard and IoT-based technologies. The system also utilizes EWS-2SW and BIO-ENV Primer software to evaluate environmental disturbances based on biotic-abiotic parameters and ecological indices.

This marine cultivation is equipped with a biomonitoring application using an environmental modeling approach. Its purpose is to measure the growth patterns of marine species and the potential environmental disturbances in coastal marine ecosystems to implement the concept of productive and sustainable aquaculture. This concept has been applied in the marine ecosystems of Karimunjawa and Teluk Awur Jepara, Indonesia.

In addition to being a speaker, Prof. Sapto was also appointed as one of the poster judges. “I was appointed by the committee as a judge for the participant poster evaluation,” he said, adding that his participation was supported by Diponegoro University through the WCU Program 2024.

This international conference was also attended by experts from various renowned universities worldwide, including from Norway, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, and the United States.
