Prof. Dr. Tri Retnaningsih Soeprobowati, M.AppSc, a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), appeared as an environmental expert on the television program Inspirasi Indonesia titled “Mak Jah”, broadcast on TVRI Central Java on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. WIB. The program featured the life story of Mak Jah, a resident of Bedono Village, Demak Regency, who has been actively caring for the coastal environment by planting mangroves around her home. Bedono Village has been severely affected by tidal flooding, forcing most of its residents to leave the area. Today, Mak Jah’s family is the only one remaining in the village.
Despite the challenging conditions, Mak Jah continues her daily life by planting and maintaining mangroves. Her efforts have had a significant impact on the local ecosystem. Mangroves not only help protect the coast from seawater intrusion but also provide essential ecological benefits, including maintaining environmental balance and supporting coastal biodiversity. Mak Jah’s dedication has drawn attention from various groups, particularly environmental observers.
During the program, Prof. Tri Retnaningsih, widely known as Prof. Naning, expressed her deep respect and appreciation for Mak Jah’s commitment to environmental conservation. She emphasized that grassroots initiatives led by local communities play a crucial role in protecting coastal ecosystems.
Mak Jah’s story has also become a major source of inspiration for research activities coordinated by Prof. Naning. Since 2022, Bedono Village has been designated as one of the research sites for Undip’s environmental studies. According to Prof. Naning, Bedono serves as a natural laboratory with great potential for scientific research, ecosystem protection, and the development of local-based environmental solutions.
“Bedono Village offers valuable lessons in environmental adaptation and coastal resilience. The contribution of science and technology is still needed to help address the complex challenges faced by this area,” she said.
Prof. Naning’s continuous research engagement in Bedono Village is expected to strengthen the role of higher education institutions, particularly Universitas Diponegoro, in providing tangible contributions to society and environmental sustainability.
